OBJECTIVE 1:
To provide policy makers with evidence on levels and trends in the availability, price, quality, volume, retailer perceptions, and knowledge of antimalarial drugs at different points of sale, to facilitate policy development and implementation resulting in increased access to quality-assured ACTs.

Activity 1: Monitor twice yearly antimalarial availability, price and volumes and retailer perceptions and knowledge of all anti-malarial drugs.

  1. Project-level study design

Activity 2: USP to monitor antimalarial drug quality at the point of sale/service.

  1. Documentation of stakeholder involvement per country
  2. Documentation of the quality control procedure per country.
  3. Implementation of the first round of screening, verification, and field and laboratory testing.
 
OBJECTIVE 2:
To provide policy makers with a map of the supply chain for antimalarials, including evidence on wholesaler volumes and the components of the consumer price in the context of the current market and policy influences on the supply chain, to facilitate policy development and implementation resulting in increased access to quality-assured ACTs.

Activity 3: Supply chain research.

  1. Analytical framework developed
  2. Model data collection instruments developed
  3. Country level distribution chain studies launched with stakeholder meetings
  4. Analytical report of distribution chain prepared for each country
  5. Policy recommendations prepared with key stakeholders for each country.
 
OBJECTIVE 3:
To provide policy makers with evidence and promote recommendations on consumer treatment-seeking behavior to support the development and monitoring of policies and other interventions to increase rates of effective malaria treatment.

Activity 4: Conduct 16 population-based studies

  1. Baseline survey completed
  2. Follow-up survey completed
  3. Quantitative tables and reports generated within 3 months of data collection
  4. Analytical report of distribution chain prepared for each country
  5. Report documenting levels (at baseline) and trends (at follow up) of key indicators,
    determinants of treatment seeking behavior, and effectiveness of any local organized
    interventions (follow up only)
 
OBJECTIVE 4:
To prepare and execute country-specific advocacy plans and international dissemination activities to ensure that the evidence is effectively translated into policy.
